Diario itinerante
New politics in three languages: English,Spanish, Portuguese.
I'm hoping to turn the blog Diario itinerante , the Itinerant Diary I started in Spanish for my newspaper, Barcelona daily, La Vanguardia first in New York on 2003 and since then as roving correspondent in Europe, the US and Latin America, into a political travelogue on substack. It will be multi lingual, cross border and politically defiant before all received wisdoms. It will include my writing, interviews with important thinkers (the first will be Jeff Sachs, Ha Joon Chang and Michael Pettis) and, if I can persuade them to join up, exclusive material by other journalists too, mainly Latin American. My journalism has been shaped by a life of perpetual motion, a nomadic, rootless engagement with a world in permanent crisis. Diario itinerante, covering two decades of seismic events set in motion first by the world financial crisis in 2008-2014, through the pandemic and the first body blows of the climate crisis, to today’s splintering geopolitics and accompanying threats of global annihilation. But now to the future. On Substack the idea is to provide my material in two, maybe three, languages A cross border, and multilingual perspective may, who knows?,provide an escape route out of our ever more insular politics, balkanized in self-enclosed and self-satisfying political enclaves where polarized battles are waged with those whom we never see or meet. The Itinerant diary will try to batter down the cushioned walls. Espero convertir el blog Diario itinerante , que empecé en español para mi periódico, el diario barcelonés La Vanguardia, primero en Nueva York en 2003 y desde entonces como corresponsal itinerante, en Europa, Estados Unidos y América Latina, en un cuaderno de viaje político en substack, multilingüe y políticamente desafiante ante todas las sabidurías recibidas. Incluirá artículos míos, entrevistas con pensadores importantes (los primeros serán Jeff Sachs, Ha Joon Chang y Michael Pettis) y, si consigo convencerles, también material exclusivo de otros periodistas, principalmente latinoamericanos. Mi periodismo ha sido moldeado por una vida de movimiento casi perpetuo, un compromiso nómada y desarraigado con un mundo en crisis permanente. Ahora en Substack la idea es ofrecer mi material y el de otros periodistas de América Latina, España y Estados Unidos -sus nombres se revelarán en su momento- en tres idiomas. Una perspectiva transfronteriza y multilingüe quizá pueda ofrecernos una vía de escape de nuestra política insular, compuesta de enclaves políticos cerrados en sí mismos y autosatisfactorios que libran batallas polarizadas con aquellos a quienes nunca vemos ni conocemos. El Diario Itinerante intentará derribar los muros acolchados.
